YOUR WEBSITE, WITHOUT THE CONFUSION

Domain vs hosting: what is the difference?

If you are planning your first website, domain and hosting can sound like the same thing. They are often sold together but serve different purposes. Knowing the difference helps you understand what you pay for and stay in control if you change suppliers.

The difference in one sentence

The domain is the address people use to find you. Hosting provides the space and service that deliver your website files and content.

Think of business premises: knowing the address does not mean you have rented the space, and renting it does not decide the name of your business. Online, the two services can likewise be purchased together or managed separately.

What is a domain and what are you registering?

This website uses the domain josecabello.net. It is a readable name, so you do not have to remember a numerical address to reach the service. The ending, such as .net, .com or .es, is called the extension or top-level domain.

Registering a domain gives you the right to use it for a period under its registration terms. You do not buy it forever: it must be renewed. Prices vary with the extension, registrar and whether the name carries special pricing.

Check that the correct person or company is the registrant and that management arrangements are clear. Having a professional handle it should not leave you unsure who it is registered to or how it is managed.

What is hosting?

Hosting keeps your website available on internet-connected servers. Depending on how it is built, it can hold files, images, applications and databases. Buying a domain does not create the content or replace hosting.

Do not choose on advertised storage alone. Suitable performance, support, backups, limits and the ability to recover or move data matter. A large plan does not compensate for an unsuitable setup.

A small informational site does not necessarily need a dedicated server. Having one does not by itself guarantee better security: configuration, updates and who handles problems also matter.

How they connect: the role of DNS

In simple terms, DNS connects your domain to the destinations of your services. This lets you register the domain with one company and host the website with another, provided the records are configured correctly.

Business email can use the same provider or a different one. Before changing hosting or DNS, check email arrangements too: moving a website does not automatically move mailboxes and their messages.

DNS changes may take time to appear consistently because different networks temporarily cache information. Plan the change and check the outcome; pressing save in a control panel is not enough.

Should you buy domain and hosting together?

Buying together can be convenient: one place to manage things, fewer invoices and one contact. Separately, you can choose each service on its own terms. Neither is inherently right or wrong; understand who manages each part.

  • Who is the domain registered to, and who controls access?
  • What will renewal cost after any initial promotion?
  • Are email, backups or support included, and on what terms?
  • How does a move work, and what must you recover before cancelling?

What you pay for and what renews

Domain and hosting are separate services even on a single invoice. Domains are commonly registered for annual periods; hosting may be paid monthly or annually. Compare renewal costs, taxes and terms rather than just the first-year price.

Neither is the same as designing or maintaining the site. Hosting may be running while a form stops sending messages. Ask what each service covers and who handles issues before committing.

Common questions about domains and hosting

Can I have a domain without hosting?

Yes. You can register a name without publishing your own website. What visitors see depends on configuration: a registrar page, a redirect or no working site.

Will I lose my domain if I change hosting?

Not necessarily. You can keep the domain and change the hosting. Check registration, renewal and access first, and plan files, email and DNS. Do not cancel the old hosting before completing and checking the move.

Does registering a domain include a website and email?

Not by itself. An offer may include those services, but check its terms. Registering the name does not mean a website is designed or hosted or mailboxes are created and maintained.

Does a free domain mean free forever?

No. Many offers cover only the initial period. Check when it renews, the cost and what happens if you leave the associated service. Do not assume every extension or a name already registered by someone else is included.

The Small Business Website Package includes the first year

If you need your first professional website, the Small Business Website Package costs €699 excluding VAT and includes free hosting and registration of an available domain for the first year. The name and registration terms are confirmed in the proposal.

It includes one page with a predefined design adapted to your business, basic copy and a contact form. Payment is made in full in advance. Technical maintenance is a separate service.

After the first year, hosting renewal costs €180 excluding VAT per year. It renews automatically for annual periods, with 30 days’ notice to cancel or move. The domain renewal price is specified in the proposal and is not included in that €180.
