TOOLS DON'T SELL, MESSAGES DO

ClickFunnels: what it is, what it costs and whether your business needs it

If you have watched any digital marketing guru, you have probably heard about ClickFunnels and sales funnels. The promise is appealing: pages that turn visitors into customers almost automatically. Here is what it is, what it really costs and why, for a service business, what sells is not the tool but what you say with it.

What ClickFunnels is

ClickFunnels is a paid platform for building sales funnels: sequences of pages designed to take someone from first interest to purchase. It was launched in 2014 in the United States by Russell Brunson and became popular with course creators, coaches and sellers of digital products.

Its appeal is that it puts everything in one place:

  • An editor to build opt-in, sales and thank-you pages without coding.
  • Checkout forms and upsells at the moment of purchase.
  • Email sending and automations.
  • Private areas for courses and memberships.
  • A small CRM to organise contacts.
ClickFunnels is not a website: it is a machine for selling products online. That matters if what you sell is your services.

What a sales funnel is, with an example

A funnel is the path someone follows from not knowing you to buying. It gets its name because people drop off at every step: many enter at the top and few buy at the bottom.

A typical ClickFunnels funnel works like this:

  1. An ad on social media with a specific promise.
  2. An opt-in page: “download this free guide” in exchange for your email.
  3. An email sequence over several days that builds trust and desire.
  4. A sales page for a course or product, with instant payment.
  5. An upsell right after paying: “add this for just €27”.

For a digital product bought with one click, that pattern works. For a service business, the last step is not paying: it is calling, writing or asking for a quote. That changes a lot. I explain it in more detail in the difference between marketing and sales.

What ClickFunnels costs in 2026

According to its own documentation, updated in October 2026, these are the current plans:

Launch: $97 a month
Or $970 a year. One workspace, 2 users, up to 10,000 contacts and 50,000 emails a month.
Scale: $197 a month
Or $1,970 a year. 5 workspaces, 5 users and 75,000 contacts.
Optimize: $297 a month
Or $2,970 a year. 10 workspaces, 10 users and 150,000 contacts.

There is a higher plan, Dominate, billed annually only. Prices are in US dollars, excluding tax.

Do the maths on the cheapest plan: about $1,164 a year, every year, just for the tool. Add the copy, the page design, the ads to bring traffic and the time to learn it. And if you ever stop paying, your pages stop working.

Who it does make sense for

ClickFunnels is a good tool for what it was designed to do. It can pay off if:

  • You sell digital products: courses, templates, memberships or online programmes.
  • You run launches with pages that change often and want to test versions.
  • You invest in advertising constantly and need to measure each funnel step.
  • You sell directly with payment on the page, without a prior conversation.

If that sounds like you, the monthly fee may be worth it. If not, read on.

Why it rarely pays off for a service business

Think of a clinic, a law firm, an estate agent or a renovation company. Nobody hires their lawyer with a “buy now” button. Clients search, compare, read, check reviews and, once they trust you, call or write. The funnel exists, but it is not a sequence of pages: it is your website, your Google profile and the way you respond.

  • You pay for features you don't use: checkouts, upsells, courses or memberships.
  • The site isn't yours: it lives on their platform, and if you stop paying or prices change, you depend on them.
  • It doesn't replace your website: you still need a full site with your services, team and details. You end up paying for two things.
  • Pressure puts people off: countdown timers and “today only” offers work for cheap products, but they undermine trust in a professional.

It is the same idea I explain in what a CMS is and whether your business needs one: choose the tool for what you need, not for what it promises.

What really converts: the message

Here is what hardly anyone tells you: the tool doesn't make the funnel, the copy does. A page that clearly explains what problem you solve, for whom and what the next step is converts on ClickFunnels, on WordPress or on an HTML site. A confusing page converts nowhere, however much the platform costs.

I have been writing website copy since 2010, and what makes the difference is always the same:

  • Talk about the client's problem before talking about yourself.
  • Explain what you do in one sentence that is understood first time.
  • Give proof: cases, reviews, experience.
  • Ask for one clear action on each page.

That is what the four principles of copywriting and the StoryBrand method explain. Once that is solved, a simple tool is enough.

EXAMPLE

A physiotherapy clinic does not need a five-step funnel. It needs one page per treatment explaining which pain it helps with, what the first session is like, roughly what it costs and a button to book. If it wants to collect emails, a free guide such as “5 exercises for lower back pain” and a simple email tool do the same job as ClickFunnels for a fraction of the price.

Alternatives depending on what you need

Your own website plus an email tool
What I recommend to most service businesses: your own well-written website, with service pages that work as opt-in pages, and an email tool such as MailerLite or Brevo, which have free plans to start with. The site is yours and the cost is much lower.
A landing page within your website
For a specific campaign, such as a promotion or a new service, you can create a dedicated page within your site without paying for another platform.
Systeme.io
If you really want an all-in-one funnel tool, Systeme.io has a free plan with one funnel and paid plans from $17 a month. A cheap way to try before committing to something more expensive.
ClickFunnels
If you sell digital products, run launches and invest in advertising, it is a solid option. Treat the fee as a fixed business cost.

Common questions

Can I use ClickFunnels instead of a website?

Technically you can publish pages on your own domain, but it is not designed to be the full website of a service business. To present your company, services and team, your own website is more suitable and cheaper in the long run.

Does a sales funnel work for a local business?

The idea does: thinking about the client's path from discovering you to contacting you. What you usually don't need is a dedicated platform to automate it. A clear website, a good Google profile and a quick response are your funnel.

Which is better, ClickFunnels or Systeme.io?

They do similar things. ClickFunnels is more complete and more expensive; Systeme.io is simpler and has a free plan. A service business usually needs neither.

A website that sells your services without depending on platforms

I design websites and write their copy so that every page does its job: explain what you do, build trust and get people to contact you. No funnel platform fees, and a website that belongs to you.
